Germany and Post WWI Politics

political-map-of-europe-before-ww1-i8Given the current international political scenario of the whole world, people are beginning to look back to the past, analyze historical events that led to a number of atrocities and crimes against humanity, and worry about whether we are now witnessing a new wave or re-emergence of extreme right wing politics. The leaders of the right wing politics are of the view that certain social orders or hierarchies are natural and even desirable. Advocates of these ideas defend these views by using theories of natural law to support their claims, religion and traditions.

Positions of power held by white people and notions of inequality and social hierarchies between different races and ethnicities are viewed as acceptable and even natural, due to the fact that these have remained that way for many centuries. Far right wing politics are seen as conservative and reactionary. Some examples of these movements today are Neo Nazis or White Supremacists. Recently there was a scandal in Washington D.C. involving a conference of an extreme right wing group that used the phrase “Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!” The crowd responded with energetic cheers and Nazi salutes.

In any case, different mechanisms of control and manipulation of the masses, known as demagogy and populism, were put to use in the past in Italy and Germany, especially after the loss of WWI, which left the latter country decimated and impoverished, and its people hungry and angry with the rest of the world. This general feeling of unrest, unease and hatred for other countries and foreigners were taken undue advantage of by political leaders such as Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, leading to the rise of Fascism and Nazism. In order to prevent something like that from happening again, it is important to have a well educated population, mindful of human history, for uneducated people are easier to control and manipulate.
